BELOIT, WI (WSAU) – A man who tried to take a police officer’s gun in Beloit was shot on Wednesday night.
It happened after a traffic crash around 7:30pm on Prairie Avenue near Copeland Avenue. The officer, a sergeant with Beloit PD, was investigating the crash when a man approached on foot and attempted to take his firearm. The sergeant shot the subject, who was taken to a nearby hospital. Their name and condition haven’t been released.
No officers were injured.
The name of the officer involved hasn’t been released. The officer is on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy in police-involved shootings. The case will be investigated by the state Department of Justice. Findings will then be forwarded to the Rock County DA’s office.
