MADISON, WI (WRN) – The weekend saw Wisconsin’s first confirmed case of the Omicron coronavirus variant.
On Saturday the state Department of Health Services reported a Milwaukee County man who’d recently traveled to South Africa tested positive for the new variant.
He’d been fully vaccinated and received a booster dose and importantly, had only mild symptoms that did not require hospitalization.
This case is not related to an outbreak linked to a Milwaukee County wedding that saw multiple California residents infected with the Omicron variant.
In that case, five people in northern California who are positive for the COVID-19 omicron variant attended a wedding last weekend in Milwaukee. On Friday, Alameda County, California health officials said out of the group, one person had been traveling internationally prior to attending the wedding. Where the person had been traveling hasn’t been revealed.
The California health officials say all five of those who have tested positive are fully vaccinated and display “mild symptoms.”
