DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – Last week, the De Pere Police and Fire Commission selected Police Captain Jeremy Muraski to take over as the city’s next police chief.
Before becoming captain in De Pere in 2019, the Allouez native served on the Green Bay Police Department for 21 years.
“It’s very humbling. I feel extremely honored to be selected. It’s a tremendous responsibility, and one that I will not take lightly in any way,” Muraski told WTAQ News. “I’m blessed to work for an excellent law enforcement agency. I think De Pere police have been very progressive over the years. They were one of the first agencies to have body-worn cameras, for example.”
Muraski doesn’t think there are any major, immediate changes that would need to happen once he takes the reins.
“I feel like I just need to make sure that we keep doing what has made us successful, and be accountable to our community and responsive to their needs,” Muraski said. “Encouraging our officers to keep doing the things they’re doing. To have those daily conversations with the citizens and get out of their squad cars and talk to folks, and just give the level of service that they’ve become accustomed to.”
The biggest challenge in his way, keeping pace with training and technology – and making sure the department can adapt and grow right along with the rest of the city.
“I think it’s an exciting time for De Pere, because it’s a very vibrant city and it’s growing and it’s changing,” Muraski said.
But overall, he’s looking forward to taking on the opportunity.
“A little bit nerve-wracking, because it is a new a new change. But it’s one that I welcome, and I’m excited to get started and I guess put my own personal feelings into the mix,” Muraski said. “I’ve spent most of my career solving problems and implementing solutions for other chiefs. Now, I get to have a little bit more of a say in the direction the department goes. But ultimately, it comes down to being blessed to serve with an outstanding group of men and women.”
Muraski is set to become chief on December 23rd.
