GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Green Bay Police had a very busy weekend.
Officers responded to nearly 800 calls for service, including ten drug complaints, ten disturbance complaints, ten theft complaints, six warrant arrests, and three weapons calls–all the same weekend as a home Packers game.
It comes at a time when Green Bay Police are already short-staffed.
“It really stretches our resources thin,” said Police Chief Chris Davis. “In the longer term, we really need to fix the recruitment and retention issues that, I think, every agency deals with right now.”
Green Bay Police are actively seeking nine new sworn officers.
Among the weapons calls were a shooting complaint in which eight spent shell casings were found in the street. In another incident, a man pointed a gun at several people leaving a bar before getting into a short car chase with police, ending when the driver crashed into a construction area. Multiple subjects fled the vehicle, but have since been identified.
Police found three handguns in the vehicle, two of which had laser sights attached.
When asked Tuesday, Davis says it isn’t clear whether or not those incidents are related or connected to gang activity.
“There is a lot of follow up that goes on,” said Davis. “A lot of work that goes on behind the scenes with detectives to make connections between cases.”
Davis commended officers for their work, saying they did a remarkable job.
“This is just one example of the dedication these men and women have,” he said.
