GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A ceremony will be held Saturday, Oct. 23 to commemorate the renaming of the Walnut Street Bridge in downtown Green Bay to Bart Starr Memorial Bridge.
Green Bay Alderperson Mark Steuer says Cherry Starr, Bart Starr Jr., Mark Murphy and state and local lawmakers will be on hand. Steuer, who came up with the renaming idea, will act as emcee of the ceremony.
The ceremony, at 11 a.m., is scheduled for the day before the Washington Football Team takes on the Packers at Lambeau Field.
At Lambeau Field in late July, Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill into law to rename the bridge.
Because Walnut Street is also part of State Highway 29, state approval was needed to rename the span over the Fox River. A bipartisan group of Green Bay-area legislators sponsored the bill.
Starr spent 16 seasons with the Packers, winning five NFL championships and the first two Super Bowls. He later became the team’s head coach, serving the role from 1975-83.
He died in 2019 at the age of 85.
