NAVARINO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It’s officially pumpkin season in Northeast Wisconsin.
At Porter’s Patch in Navarino, their pumpkins are ready.
Troy Porter owns the place. He says warm, dry summer days in the area had an impact.
“Pumpkins are pretty finicky. Obviously we got the right amount of moisture, not too much, but it kind of worked out. We have a lot of pumpkins, but not a bountiful, just outstanding harvest, which is tough to do every year,” said Porter.
Signs of the season can be found throughout Northeast Wisconsin. At Theobald Produce, owner Steve Theobald says it’s been a pretty good year.
His father Pete Theobald helps at the stand.
“We got a lot of pumpkins. He’s sold a lot already, and they’re going. And they said everybody’s decorating already, selling a lot of corn stalks, bundles, you know. They’re cheap. $5 a bundle,” said Pete Theobald, Theobald Produce.
Theobald expects the pumpkin season to last until the beginning of November. Meanwhile, Porter’s Patch is gearing up for its annual celebration called Farmtoberfest. The event features hay rides, corn cob chucking and, of course, a corn maze. Porter says he hopes there are enough pumpkins to go around.
“It’s hard to say. We got a lot now, and we’ll keep refilling and as we sell off the displays. And it all depends on the what the weather is. If we have good weather, yeah, we might be a little short come the end of October,” he said.
Pumpkins are a seasonal favorite.
People use them for Halloween decoration, or they can be used in baking to make pumpkin cookies, bars, and of course, pumpkin pie.
