GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport is welcoming Sun Country Airlines for new, non-stop service to a pair of warmer destinations this winter.
“We all love northeast Wisconsin but the reality is it gets cold in the winter always looking for a great escape…They will be starting new nonstop service between Green Bay and Fort Myers and Phoenix in December of this year and continuing into April of 2022,” said Airport Director Marty Piette. “Sun Country will be offering $79 fares each way as an introductory offer so $150 round trip to get to Fort Myers and Phoenix. It’s a great opportunity.”
“We really specialize in taking folks from cold weather climates to warm sunny destinations,” said Jessica Wheeler with Sun Country. “We’re seeing a lot of demand for leisure travel. Folks have been stuck inside for a long time, and they’re ready to go somewhere. So we’re ready to take advantage of that opportunity.”
For now, the service will be seasonal to test the market, but Piette says there’s always potential to turn it into a year-round service if there is enough interest.
“People are always looking for more options out of northeast Wisconsin and this just adds two more to that availability,” Piette told WTAQ News. “[We’ve looked at] these routes for a number of years and we’ve been working with Sun Country for quite awhile, and we identified these as two very popular destinations for northeast Wisconsin.”
Piette also pointed out the Sun Country is an ultra low cost carrier, but they also have more amenities than some other low cost carriers. They have in-flight beverage service, wider seats, and modern aircraft.
“It’s a high quality product at a low cost,” Piette said. “It’ll bring people in from further away too so I I think we’ll see our numbers continue to increase.”
The airport is seeing about 75-percent of the traffic that would typically roll through the terminals prior to the pandemic. Piette says they’re seeing the numbers coming back, and that people are getting out to travel.
“Could still be at least a year or two before we get back to pre pandemic levels, and we’re still watching the business community. We want to make sure that the business community is comfortable returning to travel, and as soon as they are, we’re ready for them,” Piette said.
