GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – One man is dead, another is in custody following a Sunday evening stabbing on Green Bay’s east side.
Police responded to a 911 call at East Mason Street and Baird Street for a 25-year-old man in critical condition, suffering from a stab wound. Investigating officers determined the stabbing actually occurred in the parking lot of a gas station on the 600 block of East Walnut Street.
The victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead around 3:15 Monday morning.
Green Bay Police Department detectives and forensic personnel were called to the scene and began the investigation immediately after the stabbing occurred. The investigation identified the suspect believed to be responsible for the stabbing as Joseph E. Olvera, a 43 year old resident of Green Bay.
Police eventually located Olvera at a home on the 1500 block of Charles Street, where he was taken into custody around 1:00 Monday afternoon. He is being held at the Brown County Jail, and charges are expected to be filed with the Brown County District Attorney’s office soon.
Identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
“I am proud of the great work our Green Bay Police team did in locating and taking this homicide suspect into custody,” said Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith. “The message is clear-if you commit a crime in Green Bay we will find you and hold you accountable for what you have done.”
