GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The month of March means we’re entering prime construction season.
The Interstate 43 project that began in 2020 restarted Monday.
Lane reductions and full ramp closures are scheduled between state highway 172 and Atkinson Drive in Brown County.
“So we’re down to one lane on 43 and we’re also redoing a lot of the ramps on 43 on the east side of Green Bay,” Wisconsin Department of Transportation regional communication manager Mark Kantola said.
Kantola tells FOX the project has a significant impact on traffic.
“Luckily we have the 172 bridge that people can use and last year a lot of people did use it when the lane was closed on I-43. So what you have to expect if you do take I-43 across to the Leo Frigo bridge is to expect some delays, especially during the peak traffic hours.”
The Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge also closed Monday for construction.
“We know any time one of our three downtown bridges has some work being done on it, that’s a major inconvenience for everybody so obviously we’re sympathetic to that so that’s one of the reasons we tried to get that bridge work done now before some of our other road work starts up,” City of Green Bay Public Works director Steve Grenier said.
Grenier tells FOX 11 Public Works is also planning on some longer term projects that would impact residential areas.
“We did the northern section of Gray Street last year. We’ll be continuing that Gray Street construction all the way down to Dousman Street this year.”
Kantola wants to remind drivers to be safe on the roads, especially in work zones.
“You need to slow down, pay attention, and drive safely.”
The Ray Nitschke Memorial Bridge is set to reopen Friday.
The I-43 project is expected to finish in October.
