GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Life is good in Northeast Wisconsin — at least according to a couple of recent national rankings.
Green Bay ranks at the top of U.S. News and World Report’s list of safest places to live in 2020-21. Meanwhile, the website WalletHub this week ranked Wisconsin the 14th best state to raise a family.
FOX 11’s Katrina Nickell recently dived into the issue of safety in Green Bay.
“The police are doing their job here in the city and I feel safe that I can call the police and they’d be here to help,” resident Shannon Montgomery told her.
Our story also points out that the national ranking doesn’t mean that Green Bay doesn’t have its challenges. In October, police statistics showed that shootings to that point in 2020 had more than doubled the total for the same time frame in 2019.
“One of the things in Green Bay is we let people know when there’s a crime problem,” Police Chief Andrew Smith said.
Many would consider safety a key component in choosing where to raise a family, and it was one of the factors WalletHub considered in its ranking. Wisconsin as a whole ranked 15th out of the 50 states in health and safety, while ranking 20th in family amenities, 15th in education and child care, 18th in affordability and 14th in socioeconomics.
Add it all up and it’s encouraging for the area we call home. Of course, national rankings can’t take into account every factor that defines a place, and just a small tweak in methodology can make a big difference in how an area ranks. In the eyes of national publications, though, life is pretty good in our little slice of the nation.
