NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) –Three employees were taken to the hospital Wednesday after chemicals were accidentally mixed at a plant in Neenah.
Around noon, Neenah-Menasha Fire Rescue received a medical call at Galloway Co. for an employee who got sick.
According to fire chief Kevin Kloehn, crews learned the employee got sick after chlorine may have been erroneously emptied into a tank filled with acid.
All three employees who were taken to the hospital have been released.
Kloehn says the concern was the chemicals would form a type of chlorine gas which is dangerous. Hazmat crews cleared the scene around 4 p.m.
The plant and residents within two blocks north and northwest of the plant — because of the wind direction — were evacuated. They were allowed to return to their homes around 4 p.m.
During the evacuation, the Red Cross assisted the residents at Shattuck Middle School, where they were taken.
A stretch of Commercial Street was closed for a few hours during the incident.
According to its website, Galloway Co. makes concentrated liquid dairy blends.
