GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Hundreds of Green Bay parents are calling for their kids to be put back in school.
That’s even though a surge in COVID-19 cases continues in Northeast Wisconsin.
“We just want Green Bay public schools to try.”
Brook Andrews is a Green Bay mom of two. And the woman who started a group on Facebook, is calling to put kids back in their classrooms — their actual classrooms.
The call comes as coronavirus cases rise and the state hit a single-day record-breaking death toll due to COVID-19.
Why bring them back when cases are so high, FOX 11 asked?
“There doesn’t seem to be an indication that the cases are going to go away. The risk I think should be assessed by the families,” Andrews said.
Meanwhile, superintendent Stephen Murley tells FOX 11 he understands parents wanting their kids back in school. But it’s more than what goes on behind the walls.
“We want to make sure that to the extent possible as were looking at the extensive community spread in Brown County and Wisconsin that we are not adding additional factors.”
On top of community spread concerns are logistics.
Right now, some students are still attending in-person classes, like students taking a welding class or other dual credit classes.
So, Murley and the district board are tasked with juggling those students’ needs and those learning at home.
“What we’re trying to do is balance the needs of those who must be on campus with those who can be off campus.”
The Facebook group has about 330 members and counting, but Andrews hopes the district’s more than 21,000 students and their families will join the effort.
“We’re asking for there to be an option, for those that want to, to go to in person, for those that want to stay virtual, stay virtual.”
District leaders are still trying to figure out if that’s possible.
They’ll discuss future learning options at the its school board meeting next Monday.
