STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Two 17-year-old’s are in custody in connection with a stolen vehicle spree in Sturgeon Bay that resulted in four vehicles being stolen, a high-speed chase and a crash into a building.
It all began around 3:30 a.m. Thursday when officers received a report of a vehicle crashing into a tree on the city’s west side.
When an officer arrived, a male and female were standing by the vehicle. When the officer began to approach, the two ran off. After losing sight of them, police learned the suspects had entered a garage and stole the vehicle.
Nearly three hours later, just before 6:30 a.m. officers received a second report of a stolen vehicle.
The vehicle owner was able to use GPS to track the vehicle to the 200 block of Thorn St.
Not long after, around 7 a.m., a third vehicle was reported stolen from a home.
While authorities were searching an east side apartment complex around 8 a.m., an officer spotted the stolen vehicle driving in his directions and a male and female inside.
The vehicle was parked and the two suspects ran off again.
When officers pursued the suspects on foot, they split up, with the female continuing to run away and the male stealing a fourth vehicle from a residence on Georgia St.
The male suspect drove at a high rate of speed directly at police officers who were on foot. The officers were able to get out of the way as it sped by.
The male suspect continued to drive at a high rate of speed on Jefferson St. before crashing into a building in the 200 block of N. 7th Ave.
The suspect got out and tried to run away but was soon taken into custody after a citizen called in to report a suspicious man near where the crash occurred.
The female suspect was taken into custody after a citizen called about a suspicious person outside a residence in the 800 block of Georgia St.
No law enforcement officers, community members, or suspects were injured during the incident.
Police say they are recommending multiple charges against the two 17-year-old’s, including operating a vehicle without owner’s consent, burglary, battery or threat to a law enforcement officer and eluding an officer.
