I was happy to stop out at the farm and talk with Cassie. She's definitely a hard-working farmer, like most. Cassie's one of those people that is all about the cows and has also been very involved in the county fair for as long as I can remember.
She started farming on her own back in 2007 after being a herdsperson on a dairy for five years. “I just decided I wanted to scale down and try to do something on my own,” says Cassie. It's been working out for her as she kept growing the herd ever since.
Her and her husband Jeff are also balancing life between her farm, his farm – Zirbel Dairy Farms, LLC, and raising three kids. She mentioned how happy she is to be able to raise her kids on the farm saying, “it teaches you a work ethic like you don't see anywhere else.”
Luckily, the kids are extra hands to help out on the farm after school.
Cassie talked a little about what she would say to someone who is skeptical of farmers. We have so many articles and posts out there that try to scare people into thinking there are antibiotics in the milk we buy and that makes people go to alternatives, like the juices that are labeled as “milk”.
Cassie said, “There are no antibiotics in milk, everything goes through certain checkpoints on the farm and in the milk plants.”
All in all, you can tell that this is her passion and this is what she was meant to be doing.
